“大泉五十”是王莽新朝（公元7 - 23年 ）货币改革的重要产物，是新朝通行货币里流通久、铸量大的一种。形制与工艺：圆形方孔，正面篆书“大泉五十”，版别丰富。从币值形态分，有官铸（钱径约28毫米，重十二铢，合今制8克 ）、厚重型（早期铸，重约10克，有达15克者 ）、薄小型（天凤元年王莽允贬值后，民间熔厚重大泉五十盗铸，径26毫米，重3克左右 ）、幺荷钱（新朝末年私铸，重0.5克左右 ）等；还有重轮（双层轮廓，文字有特点，“大”字如燕，“泉”字顶呈波浪状 ）、背四出纹（四条纹线从内廓交汇角至轮廓，真品对角线难垂直交叉 ）等特殊版式 。
