Acquired from the above by the present ownerMachine Hallucinations – ISS Dreams transforms 1.2 million images captured by the International Space Station, along with satellite imagery of Earth, into a dynamic AI-generated composition. Using generative adversarial networks (GANs), the artwork explores the subconscious of artificial intelligence, revealing a new kind of machine-driven cartography.
Part of the ongoing
Machine Hallucinations series, this work stems from years of research into AI’s ability to process and reimagine vast datasets. Since 2016, the artist’s studio has collaborated with machine learning models—such as DCGAN, PGAN, and StyleGAN—to interpret collective visual memories of space, nature, and urban environments. By filtering and structuring these datasets, the AI generates surreal dreamscapes that bridge data, memory, and imagination.
This evolving digital cosmos invites viewers into an immersive, ever-changing experience—one that challenges the boundaries of human and machine creativity. As the artist describes it:
"If a machine can learn, can it also dream? Can it hallucinate?"
By harnessing AI’s generative power,
ISS Dreams offers a poetic vision of a world beyond human perception, where artificial intelligence not only reconstructs reality but envisions new ones.
