作品描述:
CHARLES LE BRUN (PARIS 1610-1690)
Étude de draperie
sanguine, craie blanche sur papier brun
36 x 21,2 cm (14
1⁄
4 x 8
3⁄
8 in.) ;
Fragment d'homme nu (verso du montage)Marque de collection non identifiée (pas dans Lugt)CHARLES LE BRUN, STUDY OF DRAPERY, RED AND WHITE CHALK ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER
After a four-year trip to Italy, this pupil of François Perrier returned to Paris and played an active part in founding the Académie de Peinture in 1648. Meanwhile, Nicolas Lambert undertook major interior decoration work for the Hôtel Lambert in Paris, built in 1641-1644 by Le Vau. Charles Le Brun was commissioned to paint the second-floor gallery on the theme of the legend of Hercules. Twenty-three studies drawn in preparation for this ambitious ceiling decoration, mainly in red chalk (few are in black stone), are held by the Musée du Louvre (L. Beauvais,
Charles Le Brun.
Inventaire général des dessins. Ecole Française, Paris, 2000, I, n
os 5-28, ill). The study of the
Drapery of Iris partially covering her right leg, in red chalk heightened with white, is stylistically comparable to the present drawing, although less ambitious, as the human figure is barely drawn (Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. 28467;
op. cit., no. 15, ill). Here, the figure shows a few variations from the painted ceiling, notably the absence of wings, which will appear in the final work.
