This impressive large drawing is rare among Tempesta’s works for its size, technique and the degree of finish. Only rarely did the artist employ blue paper in his graphic works. A rare comparable example of similar size and technique is the sheet with a Battle scene in the Louvre (inv. 1848 recto; F. Viatte, Dessins Toscans XVIe - XVIIIe Siècles, Paris, 1988, I, no. 453, ill.). The mounted figure throwing a spear in the foreground of this sheet appears in one of Tempesta’s illustrations for Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata (see The Illustrated Bartsch XXXVII, no. 1226). The drawing could have been an invention, not translated into print, for that project.
