A Straw-glazed Figure of Dove, by Fei Cheng Wu (1914 - 2000), 1950s. Fei studied at the Art Department of the National Central University (Nanking) under the renowned artist ?????? (Xu Beihong). In 1946?C47 he received a scholarship and travelled to the UK; he enrolled at the Slade School of Art in London from about 1947 to 1950. Fei Chengwu??s work spans both Western oil-painting techniques (early in his career) and traditional Chinese ink and colour techniques, especially later in his life. He is well-known for his bird-and-flower paintings, plants, and natural subject-matter executed with refined brushwork and a blend of East-and-West sensibilities. Auction records often list ink & colour on paper works depicting birds, blossoms, bamboo. His works appear at auction and are held in collections; they continue to be studied as part of the story of Chinese artists abroad and the exchange of visual culture.
