Movm. No. 3 8278187, Ref. 16570, Cal. 3185, Case No. A222259, Dimensions 40 mm, circa 1999, Origin Schweiz, Original box, Original certificate
Case: Steel, screw back with marking 16570, screwed "Twinlock" winding crown, fixed steel bezel with engraved 24-hour scale, very good and very long steel "Oyster" bracelet ref. 78790, 7/6 bracelet elements, endlinks stamped 501B, Oysterlock folding clasp X3 (3/1999), total length 180 mm.
Dial: Black, "SWISS only" marking, luminous indexes (Super-LumiNova), luminous Mercedes hands (Super-LumiNova).
Movm.: Automatic.
The defining feature of the Explorer II is its distinctive red 24-hour hand, which, in combination with the fixed bezel, can be used as a day/night indicator or to display a second time zone - a feature that remains iconic to this day. Originally, the Explorer II was designed for cave explorers, polar researchers, and adventurers working in environments without daylight. The Explorer II reference 16570 is one of Rolex’s most popular sports models and a true classic among modern Rolex watches. It was produced from 1989 until around 2011 and is considered the longest-running Explorer II reference ever. With its robust construction, striking 24-hour hand, and clean design language, it is both functional and highly sought after by collectors. Reference 16570 succeeded the Explorer II reference 16550, which was introduced in the late 1980s. With the 16570, Rolex refined the Explorer II concept and created a model that remained virtually unchanged for over two decades. It has since achieved cult status among collectors, as it represents the last Explorer II generation in the 40-mm format. The later reference 216570, introduced with a 42-mm case, appears significantly larger and bulkier, making it less appealing to many fans. The watch is in good condition; only the bezel insert has been reworked and the case was polished. The dial and hands are perfect. The movement is excellent, and the watch starts up immediately, nevertheless we recommend a service. The watch comes with a Japanese Rolex certificate issued in Otaru, Hokkaido.
Case: very good, slightly worn, polished. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running, cleaning recommended.
