图录说明
The opening of Japan to Western trade in 1854 prompted a renewed interest in the arts of the Orient, and Japanesque ornamentation was common in Europe. This tea caddy is very similar in style and execution to an 1876 silver-gilt and enamel inkstand, signed Boucheron and attributed to Paul Legrand, which sold at Sotheby's, New York, 24 October 2000, lot 179 and is now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The caddy and inkstand share Legrand's distinctive geometric combinations of vivid yellows and blues alongside varied, painterly greens. The faces on the caddy are identically treated in a smoking set also attributed to Legrand, sold Sotheby's, New York, 5 April 2006, lot 62.
Legrand (1840-1910), whose works for Boucheron featured in the Exposition Universelle of 1878, was the Paris firm's specialist in oriental subject matter. "He is a born colorist and loves inventiveness," wrote Frédéric Boucheron. "All my goldsmith's work in the Japanese style is by him" (Gilles Néret, Boucheron: Four Generations of a World-Renowned Jeweler, New York, 1988, p. 47). Other sales of Legrand's work include a Japonesque nécessaire dated 1878, sold Sotheby's, New York, 21 October 1997, lot 54.
