Xu Qiu, also known by several alternative names including Dianfa, Hongting, Zhuocun, Juzhuang and Fengjiang Yufu, was a scholar official and bibliophile active in the early Qing dynasty. He was born in Wujiang County (present-day Wujiang District in Suzhou), Jiangsu Province. Appointed as a jiantao (examining editor) in the Hanlin Academy, Xu Qiu contributed to the compilation of History of Ming. During his time in the capital, he formed a close relationship with Zhu Yizun (1629-1709), a prominent scholar-official and poet who shared his ideals.
Unwilling to curry favor with those in power, Xu Qiu eventually resigned from office and returned home. A passionate traveler, he journeyed extensively throughout Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces in the east, the regions west of the Yangtze River, Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces in the south and Henan Province in the north. He was twice honored with imperial calligraphy from Emperor Kangxi (r.1661-1722) during the emperor's inspection tours in Jiangnan. In his later years, Xu Qiu resided in the Songfeng Studio in Zhenze County. Behind the studio stood the bFengcao Pavilion, adorned with a calligraphic plaque inscribed by Zhu Yizun.
Xu Qiu excelled in both painting and poetry. His landscapes feature texture strokes in dry ink and elegantly rendered trees. He authored several anthologies of poems and essays, which were also highly regarded by contemporary Korean scholars. His publications include "Colophons for the Portrait of Fengjiang Yufu," which documents his portrait painted by Xie Bin (1601-1681), a disciple of the renowned portraitist Zeng Jing (1564-1647), in 1675 with the background added by Zhang Sheng. The work was accompanied by colophons from approximately seventy-two prestigious scholars and officials such as Cheng Sui (1605-1691), Liang Qingbiao, Shen Quan (1624-1684), Wang Shizhen (1634-1711), Gu Zhenguan (1637-1714) and Nalan Xingde (1655-1685). This remarkable gathering of colophons reflects Xu Qi's wide influence and esteemed standing within the intellectual and literary circles of his time.

註:徐釚,江蘇吳江(今蘇州吳江區)西濛港人,字電發,號虹亭、拙存、菊莊,晚號楓江漁父,清初文官及藏書家,編有《菊莊藏書目錄》。曾由戶部尚書梁清標(1620-1691)舉薦翰林院檢討,並參與修撰《明史》,與朱彝尊(1629-1709)同寓虎坊橋。不事權貴,意在遣中,遂歸。性好遠遊,東入浙閩,歷江右,三至兩粵,一至中州。康熙南巡,兩賜御書。晚年居震澤縣松風書屋,後有豐草亭,亭上隸書額為朱彝尊書。
徐氏善畫,山水以乾筆皴擦,具孤高之致,林木則風秀俊逸。所著詩文膾炙藝苑,有《南州草堂集》等多部詩詞文集。其中《徐電發楓江漁父小像題詠》(或《楓江漁父圖題詞》),記曾鯨(1564-1647)高足謝彬(1601-1681)為其寫照,章聲補圖,程邃(1605-1691)、梁清標、沈荃(1624-1684)、王士禎(1634-1711)、顧貞觀(1637-1714)、納蘭性德(1655-1685)等約七十二家明賢與像後題詠,足見徐氏之聲望。
