Whereas this painting bears a signature and seal connecting the painting to the hand of Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), it was most likely painted centuries later, in the Suzhou workshops dedicated to replicating old paintings to meet the demands of voracious collectors that treasured antiques. The story that is narrated dates to the Han Dynasty, but under Mongol rule in the Yuan, the theme of Noble Han Chinese interacting with northern barbarians became especially poignant.
Other nearly identical compositions include a colored version in the British Museum 1919,0414,0.1 bearing the signature of Qian Xuan.

註:此幅作品雖署有趙孟頫(1254-1322)名款並鈐印,然其成作年代極可能在數百年之後,當出自蘇州畫坊匠人之手。彼時蘇州盛行仿古之風,以供嗜古若渴之藏家所好,此幅當爲其中佳例。畫中所敘故事本溯源於漢代,然在元代蒙古統治背景下,漢族貴胄與鬍人往來題材更具深意與象徵意味。
構圖極類似的傳世畫作有若幹件,其中一幅設色本,署錢選名款,現藏大英博物館(編號1919,0414,0.1)。
