Collection of Liu Jinglin (1888-1976)
New York Collection
The inscriber of the title slip and the last colophon was Liu Jinglin (1888–1976), style name Shiqian, sobriquet Yin. His ancestral home was Hantang, Sanshui, Guangdong Province. His father, Liu Chengkai, operated the Chinese painting shop Duobaozhai in Guangzhou. From a young age, Liu showed a fondness for painting and calligraphy. In his early years he served in government, but in his spare time participated in the Guangdong National Painting Research Society. His artistic style followed the tradition of the "Four Wangs," and many of the fine works from his collection later entered the Bei Shan Tang collection of Dr. Lee Jung Sen (1915-2007).
With the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Liu Jinglin joined the military. After living through the upheavals of the era, he eventually settled in Hong Kong in his later years.
Liu's title-slip inscriptions on paintings and calligraphy were numerous. For instance, Landscape after Dong Yuan by Wang Jian (1598-1677), once in the collections of Pei Jingfu (1854–1924) and Wang Jiqian (C.C. Wang, 1907–2003), bears his inscription. This work was sold at Christie's Hong Kong on 26 November 2012, lot 878.
