During the reign of the Ming Emperor Xianzong (r. 1464-1487), the Grand Director Eunuch of the Ceremonial Service Huang Ci (?-1486) amassed a substantial collection of paintings and calligraphy. Upon his death while serving as garrison commander in Nanjing, the collection passed to his grandnephew Huang Lin (1470–?), an officer of the Imperial Bodyguard. Much of their collection derived from the imperial court, and surviving works are today in the collections of leading institutions, for instance, Mi Fu (1051-1197)'s Puhuang Tie (Catching Locusts) in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Wen Yanbo (1006-1097)'s Three Letters in Semi-Cursive Script in the Palace Museum, Beijing, and Shen Liao (1032-1085)'s Dongzhi Tie (Letter on Conduct and Restraint) in the Shanghai Museum. Among paintings, notable examples are Zou Fulei (a. mid-14th century)'s A Breath of Spring, now in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution.
Along the left margin of the present lot appear three seals of Huang Lin, two of which, Huang Lin Meizhi 黃琳美之 (fig.1) and Huangshi Huaidong Shuyuan Tuji 黃氏淮東書院圖籍, are recorded in Shanghai Museum ed., Zhongguo Shuhuajia Yinjian Kuanzhi Vol. II 中國書畫家印鑒款識·下, Beijing, 1993, artist no. 845, seals no. 5 and 8, p. 1142, and are also found impressed on the aforementioned works from Huang's collection (fig.2). The third seal, Biaogong jinglie zhi jia 表功旌烈之家 (fig.3), is rarely recorded, yet appears on important former imperial holdings, including Fusheng Shoujing tu (Fusheng Transmitting the Book of Documents) attributed to Wang Wei (?-761), now in the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art, and Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322)'s calligraphic handscroll Poetry on the Baotu Waterfall in the National Palace Museum, Taipei (fig.4).
Like the present lot, both works later passed from Huang Lin to Li Tingxiang (1481–1544), Minister of Revenue during Jiajing's reign (1522-1566), whose seal Puyang Li Tingxiang shuwu ji 濮陽李廷相書屋記 (figs.5 & 6) also appears alongside. Li Tingxiang and his father built the Laihe Lou (Pavilion for the Coming of Cranes), which housed many Song and Yuan masterpieces. Among these were Wood and Rock attributed to Su Shi (1037-1101), sold at Christie's Hong Kong on 26 November 2018, lot 8008, and Ma Hezhi (a. mid-12th century)'s handscroll Odes of the State of Bin, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The work also bears the seal Deyu xinshang 德畬心賞 (fig.7) of Pan Shicheng (1804–1873), recorded in Shanghai Museum ed., Zhongguo Shuhuajia Yinjian Kuanzhi Vol. II 中國書畫家印鑒款識·下, Beijing, 1993, collector no. 1080, seal no. 1. Pan Shicheng, courtesy name Zishao, sobriquet Deyu, was a native of Panyu, Guangdong Province, who made his fortune in the salt trade during the Daoguang reign (1820-1850), eventually serving as Salt Transport Commissioner of Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. His celebrated collection was housed in the Haishan Xianguan in Guangzhou.
Finally, the mounting bears an inscription by Zhang Fakui (Chang Fa-k'uei, 1896–1980), courtesy name Xianghua, a native of Shixing County, Guangdong Province. A Hakka by origin, Zhang was a prominent military official for the KMT during the Northern Expedition. After 1949, he settled in Hong Kong, where he wrote the present colophon in 1951. Maintaining political neutrality in his later years, he devoted himself to leading the Tsung Tsin Association and supporting the Hakka minority community.

在明憲宗時期,司禮太監黃賜(?-1486)收藏書畫甚豐。其於南京守備任上逝世後,藏品由長侄、錦衣衛官員黃琳(1470-?)繼承。二黃所藏多出自內府,現存其舊藏有台北故宮米芾《捕蝗帖》及蔡襄《澄心堂帖》、北京故宮藏北宋文彥博《行草書三札帖》及南宋辛棄疾《去國帖》、上海博物館宋代沈遼《行書動止帖》等重要法帖,畫作則有美國史密森國家亞洲藝術博物館藏元鄒復雷《春消息圖》等,俱是宋元寶作為多。明人周暉(1546-?)在《金陵瑣事》中有載:「蘊真黃琳,字美之,家有富文堂,收藏書畫古玩,冠於東南。吳中都玄敬,自負賞鑒,且眼界甚富。一日,同顧華玉先生聯騎過美之看畫。玄敬謂美之曰:姑置宋元,其亦有唐人筆乎?美之出王維著色山水一卷,王維《伏生授書圖》一卷,又出數軸,皆唐畫也。玄敬看畢,吐舌曰:生平未見,生平未見。
本拍品左邊緣所見黃琳藏印三方中之二,「黃琳美之」(圖一)「黃氏淮東書院圖籍」,著錄於《中國書畫家印鑒款識·下》(上海博物館編,北京,1993年),收藏家編號845,印蛻編號5及8,第1142頁,此二印亦見鈐於上述黃琳舊藏畫作上(圖二)。而最下方一枚「表功旌烈之家」(圖三)雖罕見有載,卻見鈐於歷經宋元明三朝內府所藏的傳王維《伏生授經圖》(現藏日本大阪市立美術館)及台北故宮藏趙孟頫書趵突泉詩卷(圖四)。此兩卷亦如本拍品,經黃琳遞藏予嘉靖年間戶部尚書及藏家李廷相(1481-1544),上同鈐有「濮陽李廷相書屋記」一印(圖五及六)。李廷相與其父所蓄「來鶴樓」亦多宋元名作,除上述兩卷重器,由香港佳士得於2018年11月26日晚間拍賣釋出的傳蘇軾《木石圖》(拍品編號8008)及紐約大都會博物館藏南宋馬和之《詩經豳風圖》亦均為李氏舊藏。
潘仕成(1804-1873),字子韶,号德畬,番禺人,道光間鹽筮致富,官至兩廣鹽運使。其收藏負盛名,在廣州築海山仙館,有水木清華之勝。本拍品上所見其藏印「德畬心賞」(圖七),著錄於《中國書畫家印鑒款識·下》(上海博物館編,北京,1993年),收藏家編號1080,印蛻編號1。
張發奎(1896-1980),字向華,廣東始興清化鄉矮嶺村(今隘子鎮彩嶺村)客家人,國民革命軍北伐時期名將,1949年後居於香港,裱邊上題跋為其居港時(1949-1980)所書。移居香港後,其政治傾向保持中立,致力領導崇正總會,推動客家社群事務。
