Pieter Florentius Nicolaas Jacobus Arntzenius (1864-1925)
Street in The Hague, signed lower left, oil on panel, circa 1918, 23 x 18 cm.Provenance: private collection (Amsterdam). Arntzenius focused on portraits between 1915 and 1920. He painted his well-known street scenes of The Hague sporadically during this period and usually in a small format: "And with even less detail than before" (Dolf Welling, in: "Floris Arntzenius", Van Voorst van Beest Gallery, 1992). In this painting, the mustached figure in the center right is wearing a fedora (Arntzenius himself?). Fashion had also gradually changed: the late 19th- and early 20th-century bowler hat had been replaced by the fedora around 1920. Renowned art historian Victorine Hefting had already pointed this out in 1969 at the major Arntzenius exhibition at the Hague Gemeentemuseum.
