Ivory Coast
with a kapok fruit crest, ribbed horns, a chevron band above the two faces, each with a raised nodule and scarifications to the forehead, pouting mouths with bared teeth, with side and base protrusions, with a label inscribed
Kpelie carved by a Klé (Kulé) of the Kouto tribe, Tinderala Region,
35cm high.
Provenance
Christie's, London, Art and Ethnography from Asia, Africa, The Americas and the Pacific, 1 December 1982, lot 121 - probably carved by a member of the famous Coulibaly family.
