Philip Wouwerman was known to have painted a number of scenes similar to the present example, specifically including a Sutler's Booth; A tent set up by a man, or often a woman, who would follow the path of an army on the march and sell refreshments and provisions to the troops passing by. In this work, the cavalrymen and a young country woman are seen drinking wine, talking and adjusting their saddles beside a tent. Beyond, various scenes unfold, including figures beside a river, and more cavalrymen within a wooded landscape.
