Paul Bril was born and trained as an artist in Antwerp. In 1575 he travelled to Rome where he became a leading landscape painter. The present work is a wonderful example of Bril’s earliest landscapes. These are intimate, finely detailed forest scenes rooted in the Flemish tradition. However, his style underwent a profound transformation following his exposure to contemporary Italian landscape painting, most notably the work of Annibale Carracci.
As his career progressed, Bril became a master of the idealised landscape. His mature compositions reveal a sophisticated understanding of atmospheric perspective. He also worked extensively in fresco and often collaborated with figure painters.
