Charles Henri Joseph Leickert, view of a city
拍品描述:
Charles Henri Joseph Leickert (1816-1907)
View of a city with figures on a river, canvas 75x120 cm in a classic gold-colored frame, external dimensions are 110x155 cm. In this work, the old village of Overschie can be seen in the background and the Schie River in the foreground. The former church tower (which almost completely burned down in 1899 after being struck by lightning) is prominently present. The tall house on the right is the Veerhuis (1767). Above the entrance door to the ferry house (not depicted in this work) is the coat of arms of Delft. At that time, the ferryman was employed by the city of Delft. This ferryman, with a boat hook, can be seen in the center with three passengers on board. On the left of the painting is the Korenmolen (corn mill) (1712, rebuilt in 1971) and slightly to the right of it lies a hay barge. In the dark background, in line with the ferry in the painting, the "Hoge brug" (High Bridge) (1662) can be seen. The VOC ships sailed under this bridge to Delft. Provenance: Purchased at Sotheby's Amsterdam AM0936, auction October 2004. (Copy of invoice available) The work was originally offered to Sotheby's Paris by a French family but was auctioned in Amsterdam. It was an heirloom, originally purchased by their (great)grandmother, who had bought it at the famous 1929 auction of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. At that auction, not only a large portion of the hotel interior was sold, but also paintings from the very extensive collection of Caroline Schermerhorn Astor (1830-1908). Her family (Schermerhorn) originally came from the Netherlands; her son, John Jacob Astor IV, perished on the Titanic in 1912. The work was cleaned, retouched, and revarnished by Atelier Simonis in 2005. (Copy of invoice available)
