SAINT JULIANA OF NIKOMEDIA / CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA Netherlands, 15th century Oak, sculpted, dark stained, flattened on the back, on a pedestal. H. 49, W. 16, 14.5 cm, weight approx. 2.83 kg. Devotional figure of Saint Juliana / Catherine. Depicted in an upright posture with her head slightly bowed, a humble expression on her face and the folds of her cloak flowing gracefully. Below the main figure, on the base, is a sculpted bearded man looking up at her. Probably a representation of the pagan emperor Maxentius or a philosopher over whom Catherine triumphed according to legend. Partially damaged and repaired, tension cracks, minor Anobium infestation (inactive). Eiche, plastisch geschnitzt, dunkel gebeizt, rückseitig geflacht, auf einem Sockel. H. 49, B. 16, T. 14,5 cm, Gew. ca. 2,83 kg. Andachtsfigur der Heiligen Juliana / Katharina. Dargestellt in aufrechter Haltung mit leicht geneigtem Haupt, demütigem Gesichtsausdruck und betont fließendem Faltenwurf des Mantels. Unterhalb der Hauptfigur, am Sockel, ist ein bärtiger Mann plastisch herausgearbeitet, der zu ihr aufblickt. Wohl eine Darstellung des heidnischen Kaisers Maxentius oder eines Philosophen, über den Katharina laut Legende triumphierte. Part. besch. und best., Spannungsrisse, rest., min.
