This highly enigmatic image is characteristic of Fautrier's figurative style, emphasising the fragility of the human form through his delicate use of the medium. Fautrier became one of the most important artists associated in Post-War France, alongside Jean Dubuffet and Wols, utilising the impact of Surrealism in the Inter-War years to developing a careful balance between the abstract and the figurative.
