Head of a philosopher;
oil on canvas, bears partial label for 'George Rowney' attached to the lower stretcher bar, 59.2 x 44.2 cm.
Note:
Between 1758-1794, Gian Domenico Tiepolo produced a number of imaginary philosopher's heads in response to a similar series painted by his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), in 1757-58, from which the present work derives.This is a contemporary version of Tiepolo's original, now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago [1945.175], with some minor variations, including to the sitter's headdress, and the inclusion of his hands clasping a book at the lower corner of the composition. This painting exhibits confident brushstrokes and a striking sensitivity of handling which characterise Tiepolo's original.
