The present work recalls Artemisia Gentileschi's evocative, delicately-painted figures, characterised by a dramatic chiaroscuro which here illuminates the sitter's face, drawing the viewer's attention towards the intensity of the subject's emotion. The man's expression recalls that of Gentileschi's 'Saint Cecilia', which sold at Christie's, New York, on 10 June 2022, lot 43, as well as her 'David with the Head of Goliath' which is on loan to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, from a Private Collection.
