The Stoning of St Stephen;

Note:
The present work is after Marcello's Venusti's original composition, now in the collection of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, depicting the stoning of St Stephen, the first martyr in Christianity.
The technique exhibited in the present work very much recalls the colourful approach of the Genoese painter Giovanni Battista Paggi (1554-1627), with the artist's sensitive shading imparting the figures with a sense of solidity and depth, also evident, for example, in his depiction of the 'Education of Cupid' which was offered at Bonhams, London, on 25 October 2017, lot 8, and in his 'Birth of the Virgin' at Christie's, Rome, on 1 June 1999, lot 745.
