Antoine-Sébastien Falardeau, Canadian 1822-1889- The Christ Child s
拍品描述:
Antoine-Sébastien Falardeau,
Canadian 1822-1889-
The Christ Child sleeping on the cross, after Cristofano Allori;
oil on canvas, signed and partially indistinctly inscribed '5 Via S. Spirito / A. S. Falardeau / d'après Allori a la Galeria deo Uffizi / Florence[?]1867' verso, 34.1 x 43 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Falardeau is recorded as working as a sign-painter in his native Quebec in 1841, under Robert Clow Todd (c.1809-1866), before travelling to Florence in 1846, where he then spent much of his life. In Italy, Falardeau established himself as a proficient copyist of the works of Old Masters, winning first prize at the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma for his copy of Antonio da Correggio's (1489-1534) 'Il Giorno'.
The present picture is a copy of Cristofano Allori's (1577-1621) original oil painting, held at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. It also relates, with compositional differences, to an oil by Francesco Albani (1578-1660), which sold at the Earl of Yarborough Sale, Christie's, London, 12 July 1929, lot 6; and to an oil by Guido Reni (1575-1642). The full-length, recumbent sleeping child is depicted draped in translucent cloth and lying on wooden cross. The town of Jerusalem is prominent in the background, with mountains and a setting sun visible beyond.
