A pair of large blue and white 'Scholar' bowls, With molded lotus flower relief and cartouches showing various scenes of scholars (mostly in contemplative position), sometimes with attendants. The lower row of lotus petal panels filled with florals. The inside with a central roundel featuring another scholar and along the top a border of scholarly attributes and florals. Marked with an apocryphal six-character Chenghua mark but of Kangxi period, Kangxi period, ca. 1700, China, D 22 cm, H 10 cm, The property of a Dutch nobleman. Provenance: Johannes Bieruma Oosting (1842-1902) and his wife Cornelia Charlotte Brantsma (1848-1894), by descent to their daughter Agatha Victoria Bieruma Oosting (1875-1968). And by descent to the present owner, Both with a star crack in the base and rim chips. No hairlines in the rim. Some manufacturing flaws and irregularities. No restoration,
