The couple married in 1942 while Dr. Eckhardt served as a surgeon in the United States Army. Stationed in post-World War II Tokyo from 1947 onwards, Dr. Eckhardt was later joined by his wife. During their time in Japan, spanning from 1947 to 1952, the couple enthusiastically amassed a notable collection of fine Asian art from esteemed dealers and establishments such as Yamanaka & Co. in Kyoto, T. Kasahara and Ono Art Shop in Tokyo, and Watanabe Shozaburo, a renowned print publisher. Their extensive collection was featured twice at Sotheby's New York Asian Art Sales in 2012.
