A LACQUER BOX ATTRIBUTED TO SHIBATA ZESHIN (1807–1891).
Japan, 2nd half 19th c. 19.8 × 24.4 × 12.9 cm.
Small document box (ryoshibako) decorated with sword fittings in gold, silver and coloured hira- and takamakie. Elaborate imitations of metalwork consisting of tsuba and kozuka adorn the surfaces. Silver and gold nashiji inside. Unsigned. Very minor traces of wear.
Provenance: Old Swiss private collection, acquired in 1988 from Ashkenazie & Co. San Francisco (invoice and appraisal available).

Kleine Dokumentenbox (ryoshibako) mit Schwertzierrat-Dekor in Gold, Silber und farbigem hira- und takamakie. Elaborierte Lack-Imitationen von Metallarbeiten bestehend aus tsuba und kozuka zieren die Oberflächen. Innen Silber und Gold nashiji. Unsigniert. Sehr min. Gebrauchsspuren.
Provenienz: Alte Schweizer Privatsammlung, erworben 1988 bei Ashkenazie & Co. San Francisco (Rechnung und Gutachten vorhanden).
