A LACQUERED FIGURE OF THE ZEN MASTER YOSAI ZENSHI (1141–1215).
Japan, Momoyama period, height 50.5 cm.
Wood with polychrome paint and gold lacquer. The elaborate decoration of his overgarment is visible on the back. The eyes are inlaid. Portrait of the founder of the Rinzai Zen sect and green tea pioneer, also known as Myôan Eisai, in a reverent, seated position, the attributes in his hands are lost. Minor damages and restorations.
Provenance: Old Swiss private collection from Southern Switzerland, purchased with Allsopp & Childs, London, certificate available.

Holz mit polychromer Fassung und Goldlack, die Augen sind eingelegt. Der elaborierte Dekor seines Übergewandes ist am Rücken noch sichtbar. Ehrfurchtvolles Portrait des Grüntee-Pionieres und Gründers der Rinzai Zen-Sekte, auch bekannt als Myôan Eisai, die Attribute in seinen Händen sind verloren. Etwas best. u. rest.
Provenienz: Alte Schweizer Privatsammlung aus dem Tessin, erworben bei Allsopp & Childs, London, Zertifikat vorhanden.
