Harry Gamboa Jr. is a photographer, writer, painter, and performer whose work highlights contemporary Chicano culture in his native Los Angeles. Gamboa’s multimedia practice is defined by his attention to Los Angeles’s cultural, political, and geographic diversity, and his work sheds light on the diverging narratives and everyday absurdities of urban life.
Gamboa helped select and popularize ‘Chicano,’ a term that conveys a tenor of pride and cultural resistance. It replaces ‘Mexican-American,’ the categorization many felt was constructed by white American society — assimilationist. Half a century later, the multimedia artist, creative writer and activist sees his work as an extension of the ‘Chicano’ significance.
Gamboa has widely exhibited throughout the city at museums including LACMA, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Autry Museum of the American West. His work has also been featured in the Whitney Biennial. As a founding member of the Chicano performance collective ASCO (1972–87), Gamboa and his fellow artists staged street performances that poked fun at established cultural norms and stereotypes of Mexican Americans. His photographic and video work centers the lives of Chicano and working class Angelenos, going beyond cliche to represent the many facets of Latinx identity.
