GIUSEPPE CESARI , CALLED THE CAVALIER D'ARPINO (1568-1640), THE EXPULSION FROM THE GARDEN OF EDEN, OIL ON COPPER
This previously unknown painting by Giuseppe Cesari (1568-1640) - whose nickname the Cavalier d'Arpin recalls his birthplace - depicts the fateful moment when Adam and Eve are driven from the Earthly Paradise following their Temptation by the serpent. An angel armed with a flaming sword, guardian of the Garden of Eden, expels them. The artist also painted other versions on copper, of similar dimensions of this subject. These include the version in the Musée du Louvre (Paris, inv. 249), the one in Christ Church (University of Oxford, inv. JBS 135) and the one in Apsley House (The Wellington Collection [English Heritage], London, inv. WM. 1633-1948).
We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Herwarth Röttgen for confirming the attribution of this painting to the Cavalier d'Arpin on the basis of a photographic examination of the work.
Ce lot a été consigné en collaboration avec la maison de ventes Marambat-de Malafosse à Toulouse / This lot was consigned in collaboration with the Marambat-de Malafosse auction house in Toulouse.
Ce tableau inédit de Giuseppe Cesari (1568-1640) – dont le surnom de Cavalier d’Arpin rappelle son lieu de naissance – illustre le moment fatidique où Adam et Ève sont chassés du Paradis terrestre suite à leur Tentation par le serpent. Un ange armé d’une épée flamboyante, gardien du jardin d’Éden, les en expulse. D’autres versions de ce passage biblique exécutées sur cuivre et présentant des dimensions similaires ont été peintes par l’artiste. On distingue la version accrochée au musée du Louvre (Paris, inv. 249), celle conservée à Christ Church (University of Oxford, inv. JBS 135) ou encore celle exposée à Apsley House (The Wellington Collection [English Heritage], Londres, inv. WM. 1633-1948).
