the first, rectangular with waisted sides and integral projecting thumbpiece, all sides decorated in dark blue taille d'épargne enamel with leafy scrollwork, maker's mark, Paris grosse garantie et 3eme titre 1819-1838, 8.5 cm., 3 3/8 in. wide; the circular locket decorated with floral and scrolling foliage in black and white taille d'épargne, containing a lock of brown hair under glass, the interior of the lid engraved with an inscription reading: 'C C Grey, May 29, 1848, aged 31',

The box, a gift from Charlotte, Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry (1811-1895) to Cospatrick Alexander, 11th Earl of Home (1799–1881),
thence by descent in the collection of the Earls of Home at The Hirsel, Berwickshire.

The 1904 inventory records, 'This snuff box was given by Charlotte Anne, Duchess of Buccleuch to Alex, Earl of Home at Vienna in 1839'.

The pendant almost certainly, Maria, Countess of Home (1849-1919), thence by descent in the collection of the Earls of Home at The Hirsel, Berwickshire. Maria Grey married Charles, 12th Earl of Home (1834-1918). The inscription to the interior commemorates her father, Captain Charles Conrad Grey, RN (1817–1848) who died when she was a baby.
