According to notes in historic inventories, a gift from Queen Anne (1665-1714) to Allen, 1st Earl Bathurst,(1684–1775),
then Lionel Hervey [-Bathurst?], a gift from a Dr Home [?] to Cospatrick Alexander Douglas-Home, 11th Earl of Home(1799-1881) in February 1842,
thence by descent in the collection of the Earls of Home at The Hirsel, Berwickshire.
The 1904 inventory details the following provenance. 'This box a present from Dr Home to Lord Home Feb. 1842 said to have been given by Queen Anne to the 1st Lord Bathurst”.’ The 1938 inventory adds, 'The box was given by Dr. Hume [sic] to Lord Home in 1842 and Dr Hume obtained it from Lionel Harvey [sic] whose family was a branch of the Bathursts'.
