尺 寸:
高18.5cm;底径32cm
拍品描述:
Naturalistically cast as an adult toad with its young clambering on top of it. The raised, warty skin is masterfully rendered. Sourmounted on a lava rock overgrown with various types of moss, which provides a perfect setting for the two toads, making them appear almost alive. Mounted on base.
PROVENANCE
Acquired by Bayer from Bernheimer by Carl Duisberg prior to 1930 - Partial age damage and surface change due to many years of presenta-tion in the park
In Japanese culture, the gama (蛙,toad) carries a rich web of symbolic meanings. Most notably,it is associated with transformation,immor-tality,and protection. This symbolism is rooted in Daoist and Buddhist traditions, where the toad is linked to alchemy and the elixir of life. In folklore, the gama is often the companion of the Gama Sennin, who carries a magical toad capable of exhaling scrolls of wisdom. The toad is also reputed to possess stunning powers of escape and a formidable knowledge of healing plants, further enhancing its mystical attributes. The gama is also seen as a protective charm against misfortune. Small toad figurines are sometimes placed in homes or wallets to attract wealth and ensure safe journeys-drawing on the pun between kaeru (蛙,frog/toad) and kaeru (帰る,to return). In Chinese tradition,a three-legged toad is said to inhabit the moon and cause lunar eclipses by swallowing the celestial body, further elevating the toad’s status as a sym-bol of mystical power. Though humble in form, the gama is a powerful symbol of resilience, magical insight, and auspicious return, linking it to themes of immortality and transformation across both Chinese and Japanese mythologies. This bronze model, capturing a pair of toads in lifelike form, reflects both the naturalistic detail and layered symbolism that characterize such works.
