Exceptionally grand in scale and execution, this painting, executed circa 1630 by Gerard Seghers, depicts Christ holding his cross and surrounded by the repentant sinners: the Good Thief, King David with his lyre, the Magdalene, the Prodigal Son, and the Publican. The Antwerp painter often returned to this theme of penitents gathered around Christ, which gained popularity following the reaffirmation of the sacrament of penance at the Council of Trent. Another painting by Seghers of the same subject, but depicting the Magdalene kneeling before Christ, is in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum (inv. no. SK-A-374), and a third version (formerly in the Museo del Prado but now untraced) appears closely related to the present work.1
A black chalk drawing in the Louvre (inv. no. 22223) may be a bozzetto for the present painting, and a study for the figure of Christ, attributed to Seghers by Anne Delvingt in 2009 (Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. no. 22248), likely served as a model for the figure in several of his paintings.
1 The former Prado painting is also known through an engraving by J. Neeffs. For one example of the engraving, see Herzog-Anton-Ulrich Museum, inv. no.
