Fine Art, Hong Kong, 13th March 2007The double gourd form was much appreciated in China from at least the Tang dynasty (618-906). They were associated with abundance and fertility, largely on account of their luxuriant tendrils and many seeds. A related pair sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong in the 'Masterpieces of Chinese Precious Metalwork' sale of April 11, 2008, lot 2324. See a similar pair of double-gourd form earrings illustrated in Zhongguo zhuantong.
