A pair of fine Chinese gold filigree 'Dragon-head' hairpins, Qing Dynasty, the head of each in the form of a dynamic dragon rendered in intricate pierced work and delicate wiring, its hollowed, elongated body serving as the pin, executed in a repetitive openwork pattern, 10.8cm long, weight 11 grams in totalProvenance:Private CollectionPurchased from K.Y. Fine Art, Hong Kong, 13th March 2007Openwork 'dragon' hairpins with a hollowed shaft have been fashionable since the 12th century in China. Compare with a very similar Song-Dynasty example at the Shanghai Museum excavated from the Tan Bolong tomb, Yuepu Town, Baoshan District in Shanghai in 1978. This hairpin style is known as tongzan.
