A FINE AND RARE CHINESE GLASS INSIDE-PAINTED SNUFF BOTTLE BY MA SHAOXUAN (1867-1939) Beijing, circa 1900-1915, signed Ma Shaoxuan 約1900年 水晶內畫詩文人物圖鼻煙壺 《馬少宣》款 「少宣」印 Of flattened form, finely painted on one side with a portrait of Xu Jingcheng wearing a hat and robes decorated with interconnected wan symbols, the reverse with an inscription, signed Ma Shaoxuan and with one red seal, topped with a rose quartz stopper 7cm high 《竹筠仁兄大人雅玩 是日也天朗氣清惠風和暢仰觀宇宙之大俯察品類之盛所以遊目騁懷足以極視聽之娛信可樂也 馬少宣》 - NOTE: The subject of this bottle appears to be Xu Jingcheng, a diplomat and Qing politician supportive of the Hundred Days' Reform. He was envoy to Belgium, France, Italy, Russia, Austria, the Netherlands, and Germany for the Qing imperial court and led reforms in modernizing China's railways and public works. He was executed during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. See a similar bottle by Ma Shaoxuan from the collection of Mary and George Bloch and previously belonging to Hugh Moss, also a monochrome portrait of a Manchu official, offered at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 26 May 2013, lot 211. The same bottle was illustrated in Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, 'A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection', vol. 4, Hong Kong, 2000, no. 609. The inscription on the reverse can be translated as: 'Brother Zhujun, enjoy your time On this day, the sky is clear, the air is fresh, and the wind is gentle. Looking up, I can see the vastness of the universe, and looking down, I can see the abundance of species. So I can enjoy the view and indulge my thoughts, which is enough to satisfy my visual and auditory enjoyment. Ma Shaoxuan'
