A CHINESE BISCUIT FAMILLE-VERTE 'LION DOG' CANDLE HOLDER Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period 清康熙 五彩佛獅燭臺 The portly mythical beast in a recumbent position with its left front paw resting atop a ball decorated with a cash symbol, with a mischevous expression and open mouth to reveal rows of sharp teeth, its back surmounted by a large square-section vase decorated with blossoms 16.8cm high - NOTE See an identical figure sold at Hindmans, Jan 26, 2021, lot 11. Compare another figure sold at Rob Michiels Auction, 12th October 2023, lot 182. See a related pair of figures sold at Christie's New York, 24 Jan 2005, lot 52. See Edgar Gorer and J.F. Blacker, 'Chinese Porcelain and Hard Stones', vols I-II, London, 1911, Bernard Quaritch, plate 82, for an identical figure.
The vase has broken off and has been crudely re-glued. Some surface wear present, notably to the top edge of the vase, the glaze and the base. A fine firing crack along the brow of the face. See images.
