A PAIR OF RARE AND FINE CHINESE FAMILLE-ROSE YELLOW-GROUND BOWLS Qing Dynasty, Daoguang Period, Xiezhu Zhuren seal marks 清道光 黃地粉彩纏枝花卉紋盌 一對 《嶰竹主人造》款 Each bowl delicately potted with curved sides rising to a sloped rim, painted around the exterior with a quartet of stylised lotus flowers issuing from curling leafy stems below a band containing the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), all on a vivid yellow ground, the recessed base inscribed with a four-character xie zhu zhu ren mark in iron-red within a square cartouche 11.5cm diameter (2) - PROVENANCE: A British private collection formed during the early 20th century; thence by descent - NOTE: Xiezhu zhuren may be translated as 'Master of the Xie Bamboo'. Xie (cutting), is the name of a valley in the Kunlun mountains, and it is said that there, during the reign of the 'Yellow Emperor' Huangdi, the first musical scale was made from varying lengths of cut bamboo. Both bowls are in excellent condition. Some very minor rubbing to the enamels and gilt rims, see images.
