拍品描述:
A RARE AND FINE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE 'LANÇA-CHARACTER' STEM CUP Qing Dynasty, Qianlong seal mark and of the period 清乾隆 青花纏枝蓮托梵文高足盌 青花《大清乾隆年製》篆書款 The finely potted and exquisitely painted stem cup, decorated in blue and white painted around the steep flaring sides with eight lança characters enclosed within undulating lotus stems issuing stylised blossoms and acanthus leaves, the underside with a frieze of tightly-bound lotus lappets, all raised on a tall spreading stem decorated with bands of half-flowerheads and floral sprays on a raised rib above pendent interlinked tassels issuing from ruyi-heads, the interior with a stylised peony medallion within a double-line border repeated at the rim, the interior of the foot bearing a Qianlong six-character seal mark 14.5cm diameter - PROVENANCE: Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire; Christie's, London, 4 December 2018, lot 72; Roger Keverne, London; Bonhams, London, 7 June 2021, lot 710; English Private Collection, London 來源: 英國華威郡,拉格比公學舊藏 倫敦佳士得,2018年12月4日,拍品編號72 英國倫敦,羅傑·凱弗恩舊藏 倫敦邦瀚斯,2021年6月7日,拍品編號710 - NOTE: Inspired by Tibetan butter lamps or chang ming deng, the present cup is notable for its exquisite painting in varying tones of underglaze blue, which mimics the "heaped and piled" effect of the early Ming dynasty imported cobalt blue. Its exceptional size is also noteworthy, measuring 14.5cm in diameter and 13.5cm in height, much larger than the typical standard size of 8.5-10cm in height. The Qing emperors were strong public supporters of Tibetan Buddhism, a practice that offered both political and personal advantages by strengthening ties with Mongolian and Tibetan allies and providing spiritual guidance. The Qianlong emperor, in particular, was deeply devoted to Tibetan Buddhism, a dedication reflected in the many ceramics and decorative arts commissioned for the Imperial Court and as gifts during his reign. For comparison, a similar blue and white stem cup of comparable size, bearing the Qianlong seal mark and from the same period, is illustrated by U. Wiesner in Chinesisches Porzellan: Die Ohlmer'sche Sammlung im Roemer-Museum, Mainz am Rhein, 1981, pl.59. Another slightly smaller example is featured in the Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, Tokyo, 1981, pl.13. A similar blue and white stem cup, with the Qianlong seal mark and from the same period, was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong on 30 May 2017, lot 118. These cups were also crafted in other materials for the Imperial Court, such as cloisonné enamel and lacquer. A cloisonné enamel stem cup, with the Qianlong mark and period, is shown in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 2 Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, pl.280. Additionally, a carved cinnabar lacquer stem cup, with the Qianlong seal mark and period, is displayed in the Linden Museum, Stuttgart, and illustrated in Im Zeichen des Drachen von der Schönheit Chinesischer Lacke, Munich, 2006, pl.86.
A repair to the rim and a patch of restoration to this area, with additional restorative touch-ups around the rim. General surface wear to the glaze. See images.
