Two Japanese Mino ware blue and white vases, by Kato Gosuke IV (active c.1863-1898),
the first painted with a peacock and peahen in a landscape with diaper pattern borders, the second with lotus, pondweed and crabs, each with underglaze blue mark to base ‘nihon mino-kuni kato gosuke tsukuru (Made by Kato Gosuke in Mino province, Japan), 18cm high, firing cracks
Kato Gosuke was a renowned painter of birds and flowers who went on to win several awards at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle.
cf. a small blue and white vase with butterflies and vines by Kato Gosuke IV (1839–1905) in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
The vase painted with peacocks has an open firing crack to the edge of the foot, the second vase painted with lotus has an overglaze firing crack to the shoulder, otherwise they are both in reasonable condition, a little grubby in places.
