NEAPOLITAN SCHOOL (18TH CENTURY)PORTRAIT OF A SOPRANO CASTRATO, POSSIBILY ADAMO SOLZI, IN A BLUE COAT, HOLDING A SHEET OF MUSICOil on canvas72 x 59.5cm (28¼ x 23¼ in.)Professor Piero Gargiulo has tentatively identified the singer in this portrait as the renowned soprano castrato, Adamo Solzi. He made his debut in 1766 and was active until 1794, performing in numerous operas by Mozart, with one of his most notable roles being Ascanio in Ascanio in Alba. The music manuscript he holds is recognized as the score of Gian Francesco de Majo's Antigona, which was performed in 1768 at the Teatro Alibert in Rome. At that time, Solzi would have been quite young and likely performed the female role of Ermione.
