The delicately knapped ceremonial scepter of K’awiil, God K, patron of kingship, power and lightning, is depicted with an identifiable human profile with serrated back rack, headdress and characteristic bifurcated scroll representing a smoking torch emanating from his forehead; in brown chert.

K’awiil’s dramatic depiction as a scepter further aligns its usage in accession rituals (see the portrayal of a dignitary wielding a staff incorporating a K’awiil scepter, mayavase.com, K1261).

Shaped flints were placed in dedicatory caches to consecrate new buildings and under stelae, often along with bloodletting implements, shells and precious, regenerative jade.

The fabrication of flaked chert objects was a painstaking process that demanded time and considerable precision in flaking away at the stone. The materials supposed supernatural origin and iconography denote its function as a ritually-charged symbol of regal authority.
