拍品名称:
A SET OF SIX ANTIQUE JAPANESE SATSUMA LITHOPHANE PORCELAIN TEA CUPS AND SAUCERS
拍品描述:
19TH century, showcasing both vibrant hand-painted designs and intricate lithophane artistry. Each cup and saucer is adorned with detailed depictions of Buddhist figures and sages, rendered in rich shades of orange, blue, green, and gold. The scenes are beautifully intricate, with each character dressed in traditional attire and surrounded by delicate motifs, which reflect the high level of detail typical of Satsuma ware. What makes this set truly unique is the lithophane feature at the bottom of each cup. When held up to light, a delicate relief of a female figure is revealed within the porcelain. This hidden image, visible only when backlit, adds an element of surprise and sophistication to the set. This subtle yet intricate feature adds another layer of artistic value to the tea set, making it a fascinating collector’s piece. In excellent condition with minimal signs of wear and age. Please refer to the photos for more details. Size of the cup: 9 cm x 10.2 cm x 4.5 cm or 3-1/2" x 4" x 1-3/4"; Diameter of the cup: 13 cm or 5-1/8".
Note: Lithophanes were a popular feature in Japanese porcelain, adding an element of surprise and artistry. These delicate carvings required skilled craftsmanship, as the thickness of the porcelain varies to create shading and detail when viewed through the light, bringing the figure to life that appears almost ethereal. Lithophanes like this one were popular in Satsuma porcelain during certain periods, as they add a unique tactile and visual element that enhances the value and beauty of the piece.
