Carved with a vigorous, flowing sense of movement, the present piece is notable for the sensitive use of the natural colourings of the jade boulder. The carver cleverly took advantage of the stone’s colours to add a naturalistic depth and texture to the rocks, contrasting the brightness of the fish as it leaps up from the water. Such skilful incorporation of natural skin colourings into designs can also be seen on a green jade twin-fish vase preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated inThe Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Jadeware, vol. 3, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 49, where the author suggests that the russet skin colour was retained on the vase to resemble sunlight reflection in the fish.
Leaping fish were a popular motif to represent wishes for success to those studying for their civil service examinations, to become government officials. It evokes the legend that carp would try to leap upstream of the Yellow River at a steep passage known as Dragon Gate, and those that succeeded would transform into dragons. The same topic is depicted in a green jade flower holder in the form of two fish-dragons leaping above ruffled waves, preserved in the TaipeiPalace Museum (accession no.Gu-Yu-002098), included in the Museum’s exhibitionViewing Nature in Chinese Art: A Special Exhibit of Select Artifacts from the Museum Collection to Celebrate the 2016 Tang Prize, Taipei, 2016, cat. no. 45.
玉雕魚躍龍門,奪浪而出,雲煙相伴,構圖絕妙,活潑靈動,巧以天然玉皮褐色營造立體深度,順勢雕石,襯托出鯉魚溫潤之調,更添雅趣。石上鑴「乾隆年製」篆款,尤為難得。
