The Rolex reference 16520 "Zenith" Daytona, produced from 1988 to 2000, holds a pivotal place in the brand's history. This iconic timepiece was Rolex's first automatic chronograph and marked the debut of the legendary 40 mm case for the Daytona. Its nickname, "Zenith," derives from its significantly modified Zenith El Primero movement, which powered the watch.

Over its 12-year production run, the Zenith Daytona underwent several refinements, resulting in five distinct dial variations or "marks." The final evolution occurred in 1999, introducing Luminova for enhanced luminescence and a redesigned bracelet for improved wearability.

The present example, produced in 1999 as indicated by its serial number, features the final Mark V dial. While visually similar to the Mark IV dial, it uses Luminova for the markers rather than tritium. As a result, the dial is labeled "SWISS MADE" at the six o’clock position, replacing the earlier "T SWISS MADE T" designation.

The reference 16520 has long captivated collectors, as it bridges two important eras in the Cosmograph Daytona's evolution. It represents Rolex's first use of an automatic chronograph movement and stands as the last model to feature an outsourced movement, marking the end of an era for the brand.
