Arabic manuscript on extremely fine paper, 358 leaves, 14 lines to the page written in naskh in black ink, the text panel illuminated in gold throughout, verses separated by blue and red rosettes, within gold, blue and red rules, 'ashr marked by marginal inscriptions in red, juz' and sajda marked by gold and polychrome illuminated marginal medallions, surah headings in red on gold and polychrome illuminated panels flanked by a marginal illuminated panels with commentary in shikasteh in black ink, f.2b and 3a with fully illuminated frontispiece, preceded by prayers, in floral lacquer binding signed 'Ali Ashraf and dated 1159 AH/1746-47 AD, lacquer doublures, in bone-inlaid wood presentation box

On the binding, ze ba'd-e muhammad 'ali ashraf ast, 'After Muhammad is 'Ali Ashraf, in the year 1159 AH
This lavishly illuminated Qur'an is rare example written throughout on text panels fully illuminated in gold. The scribe, Muhammad 'Arif was a pupil of 'Abd al-Baqi Haddad who received the title Yaqut Raqam Khan during the reign of Shah 'Alam (r.1707-12) (Dihlavi 1910, p.126).
The manuscript must have travelled to Persia shortly after it was copied as it has a lacquer binding signed by 'Ali Ashraf and dated 1159 AH/1746-47 AD. 'Ali Ashraf was known for his fine flower and bird designs and for a further discussion on the artist see Khalili, Robinson and Stanley 1996, pp.72-74).
