Taken from Yosemite’s Inspiration Point, this breathtaking, iconic photograph depicts the sublime tension between the formidable forces of nature and the tranquil promise of renewal. Adams masterfully captures the fleeting instant when the storm withdraws to reveal sunlight striking a distant waterfall to the right, while, to the left, the mighty peak of El Capitan emerges from the clouds.

The dating of this negative has been a subject of debate for some time due to Ansel Adams' known inconsistencies. In Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs, Adams listed the negative date as 1940. However, in his 1985 autobiography, Ansel Adams: An Autobiography, he changed the date to 1944. The latter date was widely accepted until 2005, when an early print with a studio label marked ‘1938’ was sold at Sotheby’s. Mary Street Alinder has proposed a date as early as December 1935, based on scientific research conducted by Dr. Donald W. Olson, a Texas State University professor who utilizes physics, astronomy, and meteorological data to date significant works of art, literature, and historical events (see Ansel Adams: A Biography, revised 2014 edition, pp. 123-24).
