Private Collection, Germany
The present lot is an exceptional example of Lisa Brice’s provocative 1992 Sex Show series. Formulated during the earlier part of Brice’s artistic career, Sex Show series is credited with launching her onto the international art scene and for securing her first solo exhibition Sex Kitten at Galerie Frank Hanel in Frankfurt in 1993. Featuring a woman proudly displaying her breasts, this powerful image reclaims the female body from the male gaze. Both visually striking and conceptually confrontational, this confident woman exudes agency and empowerment. Lisa Brice’s wider body of work continues within this vein, exploring gender and sexual identity within social norms.
After graduating from the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 1990, Brice moved to London in 1998 to participate in a Gasworks residency. Despite calling London home, Brice has spent time in Trinidad and Tobago where she collaborated with artists such as Peter Doig and Chris Ofili. She has enjoyed solo exhibitions at KM21 in The Hague (2020), Charleston Trust in Lewes (2021), and Tate Britain in London (2018). Her work can be found in the collections of major museums such as Tate in London, Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington D.C and the South African National Gallery in Cape Town. Currently, her work is on view in the blockbuster exhibition, Capturing The Moment, at Tate Modern in London until 28 January 2024.
