Description
A RARE BRONZE 'BIXIE' WEIGHT

Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220)
The weight is cast in openwork as three winged, free-standing bixie with their jaws open, heads turned over their backs and leaning blow a central mountain. From Kusaka Shogado, one of Tokyo's foremost dealers.

These weights were likely used to anchor corners of seating mats and were typically crafted in sets of four. Compare three gilt-bronze weights dated to the Han dynasty nearly identical in style in the Harvard Art Museum, object number: 1943.52.43.A.
