Description
A VERY FINE POTTERY FIGURE OF A CAMEL

Tang Dynasty (618-907)
This is a camel figurine from the Tang dynasty. The Tang dynasty represents a magnificent era in Chinese history, characterised by its openness to external cultural influences. The Silk Road played a crucial role in introducing new ideas and visual inspiration from abroad. Highlighting the extensive reach of this trade route, the two-humped Bactrian camel was the favoured transportation for merchants. These camels could travel longer distances compared to their single-humped Arabian counterparts. Consequently, during the Sui and Tang dynasties, camels increasingly became a popular motif among artists and craftsmen.
