Description
A PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A HUREN
Tang Dynasty (618-907)
The Tang dynasty, which arose in 7th century China, wielded significant influence over its neighbouring countries, earning it the title of the Great Tang Empire. This work is a pottery figurine of a Hu person, which broadly refers to foreign ethnic groups in Chinese art, specifically those from Western regions.
This figure may represent a merchant who travelled back and forth along the Silk Road. Its deeply carved features, including a full beard, boots, and a coat, clearly distinguish it as non-Han Chinese in an exotic depiction. The figure still retains some of its original colouration applied over a white slip. The figurine's posture—holding something with its both hands—conveys the long journey from the West and the merchant's weariness.
